More than meets the eye
“Judge denies request to make school hold prom lesbian couple would attend” was tweeted last night by @cnnbrk and retweeted many times…
The story behind this tweet is that Itawamba Agricultural High School cancelled their prom after learning one of their students wanted to attend it with her girlfriend. The 18-year-old Constance McMillen was also told that not to wear a tuxedo. Feeling that her rights had been violated she went to the American Civil Liberties Union and the prom got cancelled alltogether.
But Constance McMillen got right, at least partly. A judge backed her up saying that her rights were violated when she was denied to attend the prom with her girlfriend and wearing a tuxedo. But the judge didn’t make the school take his cancellation back…
But what this story is really about is the discrimination in society. In theory everyone is talking about it. The same rights for everyone, no discrimination… but in real life it looks different…
Parents and schools should set a good example for their children or studentsby showing tolerance. Discrimination like in McMillen’s case is nothing but disrespectful and shallow. Everyone deserves the same rights and can’t be judged for their religion, skin colours, homosexuality or any other things. Everyone deserves to be respected and have the same rights. Hell, we are living in the 21th century but still some people are acting like in the middle ages. Haven’t we learned from the past what discrimination can cause?
People should be more open-minded. They should see the person who is really there not just the prejudice they want to see. They are persons like you and me. Whether they are religious, homosexual or have a different skin colour. In not looking behind these prejudices you might deny yourself the chance to get to know a really amazing, interesting person or even someone who could become your best friend or lover…
I just wanted to say that I am sick of people bveing so shallow and deciding what’s normal and what’s not. No one can. Who are they to think they can? Who gave them the right to do so?
I hope that with that little article I made you think about that topic. Be open-minded! Otherwise you never knew what a great part of life you missed…

PS: I just wanted to say that my intention with this post isn’t and was never to offend anyone. I just wanted to make my point clear and maybe make others think about it. I think of myself as being very tolerant and I just can’t stand how it when I see other people acting on stupid prejudices…
