Down the Rabbit Hole with Alice

alice_table-550x275Everyone knows the age old tale of the girl, who enticed by a mysterious white rabbit, accidentally fell down a hole that lead her into a magical Wonderland where dreams seemed to merge with reality. Disappearing smiling cats, wise caterpillars, an army of playing cards ruled by a temperamental queen of hearts, and a mad hatter whose tea-party never seems to end. Seems rather curious, doesn’t it?

It gets even curiouser and curiouser.

The anticipation of Tim Burton’s 2010 remake of “Alice and Wonderland” was almost as large, if not bigger (impossible) than the queen of hearts’ head.

The story takes place 13 years after Alice’s first visit to Wonderland. The White Queens crown was stolen by her vengeful sister, the cantankerous and homicidal Queen of Hearts. On her journey she encounters her old friends, although she doesn’t remember any of them. And though she can’t fight the over powering sense of nostalgia, Alice is convinced its all a dream.

Tim Burton’s films always take you far beyond the normal, welcoming you into a universe birthed somewhere in the magical and eccentric imagination of a true genius. However, I believe Alice reached new heights.

Apart from the incredibly detailed costumes, amazing set design and riveting special effects, the story alone is enough to grasp your heart. It is beautifully unique, but brings life to the original book in a way that has never been done.

The main actress in the film Mia Wasikowska, not being a household name, added a sense of genuine believability in her portrayal of the protagonist, Alice. And while Johnny Depp was spotlighted as the star of the film, Helena Bonham Carter’s performance stole the screen.

You’d have to be as mad as a hatter to not enjoy the sweet bliss that is, “Alice and Wonderland.”

But seriously, can anyone really know what’s the difference between a raven and a writing desk?

Go see the film and get back to me.
