While Deciding What Movie to Watch…

I had the awkward pleasure of coming across yet another vampire film that caught my eye. This Swedish film directed by Tomas Alfredson titled “Let the Right One In” was definitely not what I expected. The screenplay and novel, both written by John Ajvide Lindqvist, depicts a much more dark love story that involves a young boy name Oskar who lives with his mother in a building complex in a suburb near Stockholm. With no real friends and a very emotionally absent father, Oskar is the target of daily harassment and torment from the school bullies. Unattended, ignored and lonely, his life changes greatly when new tenants—a daughter and her father—move into his building complex. Eventually Oskar discovers that Eli, the new 12 year old “girl” he grows fond of, is actually a two hundred year old male vampire; something barely mentioned in the film. In the meantime, murders are occurring in his town as Håkan, Eli’s servant, continually tries to secure blood for the vampire. Oskar and Eli’s relationship grows more intense and complex throughout the film as sub plots unfold. The film’s conclusion will leave you dumbfounded.

“Let the Right One In” is not your typical vampire love story. Very well written and directed, this film has won more than 50 awards including several under Best Foreign Language Film. Lina Leandersson’s excellent portrayal of her haunting character, Eli, has not gone unnoticed. She was nominated Most Promising Performer by Chicago Film Critics Association and given a Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Actress.
