‘This is Us’ shoots through our hearts

JIVE RECORDS BACKSTREET BOYSOnce upon a time in the 90s and early 2000s Pop reined, everyone prided with their favorite pop bands and stars, they were the Rockstars of that era.

Today times have indeed change. For the last decade R’n’B, Rap, and Hip Hop music keep exchanging that title amongst each other, even Rock has had its fair share of ruling. But pop faded away, slipping into a long comma.

All pop artists have either disappeared or moved along with the times, evolving from pure pop to pop rock, and eventually made the 180 degrees turn into a completely different genre.

The Backstreet boys, who were undoubtedly, hands down the most important and biggest boy band of that era, are one of the very few selected groups that have survived this turnaround. They did so by only releasing three albums between 2000- 2007, tactfully choosing quality over quantity.

2005s ‘Never Gone’ and 2007s ‘Unbreakable’ did prove that the boys were here to stay, but the distance between the releases, struggles in their personal lives and Kevin Richardson’s departure had some fans worried about the future of their favorite group.

In 2009 they announced the release of their new album ‘this is us’ I personally have been a loyal fan all the way through, but in a time where everyone has chosen downloading singles from iTunes, and no longer caring for full albums, it felt like the quality of music in general had decreased and I didn’t feel as excited about the release as I would have been ten years ago; I had lost my faith in pop albums! Nevertheless I still bought it.

Now the real story starts; track one: ‘Straight through my heart’, Brian’s voice that has mesmerized us for over 16 years, starts the Redone produced single with a classic backstreet boys manner, a few seconds into the verse, a hip moving beat kicks off the song, and the whole album that demands an equally strong rhythmic heartbeat from my side.

Song after song I waited till the underdog appeared, the song that didn’t quite measure up to the rest, but I never found it. From the rhythmic pop piece ‘Bigger’ to an R’n’B flow in ‘She’s a dream’ and amazing pop songs with addicting beats like ‘Masquerade’ and ‘Helpless’ which features Pitbull the flow is never ending, and captivating in a way I haven’t experienced for years, even comparing it to the pop era that I cherish so much it still is a first.

Every track is single material. Varnished and wrapped to be enjoyed by a wide variety of music tastes including original Backstreet boys fans, compelling and addicting in the most healthy way possible.

The backstreet boys were never gone, but now they are ready to regain their crown as kings of pop, and possibly lead pop music back into its rightful position.

It would probably take a much better author than I ever will be to convey the right feelings to all the readers so I’ll say the following:

To everyone who is and isn’t a fan of the boys you MUST go out and GET IT.
