Movie Review: New Moon

Upon walking into the theater, my eyes caught sight of the vicious horde thickening at the box office, trailing all the way down to the concession stand: the army referred to as the “Twifans” . They are clad in armor that openly declare the side the are fighting for, armed with their pre-ordered Fandango tickets, and highly dangerous. Along the sidelines are the prisoners to this predestined war: stressed, irate, hysteric, and clinging to their last bit of fleeting sanity: the theater staff. They knew this day would come, they had both dreaded and planned it for weeks. We now approach the battlefield mapping out the path to our destination: the theater room. Dodging the snapping jaws of ravenous wolves, the self proclaimed pack of “Team Jacob” fans, and breaking free from the clawed grips of the ever blood thirsty “Team Edward” fans, we finally find ourselves victorious. We make it to our theater room with no casualties. Our next task is set before us: finding seats. A quick scan of the room finds that there are still several seats available. We hurriedly claim our seats, threatening every approaching seat hunter with our well rehearsed and highly intimidating death stare. With only minutes to midnight, the atmosphere in the room becomes heavily saturated with anticipation, the crowd becomes expectant, impatient, ridiculous. “It’s 12:02….why hasn’t it started?” Someone demands. Normally I would laugh at her stupidity, her ignorance, but my own anticipation forbade me. Finally, the lights dim, the film on the screen flickers to life, and the crowd applauds; cheering and shouting with such a vivacious roar it could bring the very dead to life.

The film itself, is great. The introduction of the wolf pack and the Volturi; two completely separate and intriguing worlds, add to the exhilaration and action of the film. The special effects of the wolves were impressive and very life like. One of the most rewarding parts of the film, being a fan of the book also, is seeing how much they kept to the storyline. With so many direct quotes and scenes that played out exactly as described in the novel, it was such a pleasure to see the film truly bring Stephanie Meyer’s work to life. The cast continues to deliver amazing performances of the characters, in particular Kristin Stewart and Michael Sheen. Kristin demanded the emotion of the audience, making everyone feel Bella’s misery on a personal level. Michael Sheen’s performance as the sinister Volturi leader with such an airy and nonchalant disposition was remarkable. All in all, New Moon was a film that did not leave fans disappointed, and will definitely bite more people into falling in love with the series
