Public Enemies on DVD

public_enemies_dvdPublic Enemies-the true story of bank robber John Dillinger and his gang’s escapades during the 1934 crime wave, and the band of FBI agents lead by Melvin Purvis to bring them to justice. The director, Michael Mann, who is known for making movies such as “Miami Vice” and “Collateral” shot on historic location for most of the scenes in the film. He went as far as renovating the jail in Crown Point Indiana where Dillinger escaped, and reconstructing the whole street where the Biograph Theater is located in Chicago to appear as it did in on the night Dillinger died in July of 1934.

The film is good, but not fantastic. As always, Marion Cotillard, Johnny Depp, and Christian Bale deliver outstanding performances. There was something amazing about knowing that each location on the film was where the actual events took place. It made the movie more genuine, and intimate with the history. As a person who got to experience the making of the film, meeting the actors and watching filming take place, it was exciting. However, I believe the movie could have been better. The suspense of what could happen next would have been interesting if you didn’t already know historically how it would end. In my opinion, if you don’t know anything about John Dillinger, you may enjoy the story a bit more. It was also exciting to see states like Chicago, Indiana and Wisconsin become the backdrop to a Hollywood movie, for a change.

If you haven’t seen Public Enemies, I think you should. Enjoy the rich history, but don’t expect to be blown away.
