That was the summer of 2009! – “Bed Race”

… how me and my friends spent our summer after graduation…

It’s over for a while now but I really like to remember last summer not only because I graduated but because my friends and me had a lot of fun. During our last weeks at school, after the exams were finished when we didn’t know how bad we really were yet we were pretty bored. We didn’t have lessons anymore and were only sitting at home for most of the time.

I remember one day I was out on the porch reading the local newspaper were the program for the village fair of my hometown was printed. It was the first time we were having a village fair for a long time. I was excited. I remembered the fair from when I was little and I especially remembered an activity called “bed race”. It always looked so funny and it would be revived in 2009 along with the city fair. The article also mentioned that the city was still looking for people to participate – and that was it! I knew what we could do this summer! Bed race!

I know in all likelihood you have never heard of it. To be honest I would be very surprised if you did, so I will explain it to you.

“Bed race” is as the name says a kind of race. I never heard of it outside my home town (which is in Germany) but it is really fun stuff. A team usually consists of 5 people; 4 to push the bed and one to sit inside, the so called “Miss Bed”. The “Miss bed” is not always a woman, sometimes it is a man dressed as a woman or some other crazy idea. In our case it was a men and the four people pushing the bed were women. My friends and me.

The four persons have to cover a certain distance (about 500 metres) pushing the “Bed” as fast as possible. The so called “Beds” are no real beds either. They just look a little like them. The are self-built vehicles with 3 or 4 wheels, a steering wheel and of course the laying area for the “Miss Bed”. The beds are also decorated to a certain theme, because there is a prize for the best decorated bed, one for the fastest and also for the most beautiful “Miss Bed”.

Our “Bed” was decorated in a cornfield theme. Here a picture of it and our team:

Though the race took place on one of the hottest days of summer it was a lot of fun and we will do it again this year! Last summer we made the 5th place and we’re wanting to do better this year!

PS: well, now you know what crazy ideas we came up with!
